SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Dressage at Hickstead could not have ordered a better weekend for the weather the 2009 South East Unaffiliated Dressage Championships. Tipping the thermometer at around 25 degrees but with a brisk breeze to keep perspiration at bay for all those working hard on their horses!

Preliminary Championships took up the whole of Saturday providing both a morning and an afternoon Champion.
Take the Liberty was ably piloted to victory by Theresa White in the morning Championship. This elegant granddaughter of Reubenstein is very proudly owned by Louise Baily and was originally bought for her 15 year old daughter to event but proved to have far too much ‘movement’ for her to cope with at present! Theresa and ‘Libby’ also took third place in the Sunday afternoon Novice Championship.
Moya Wooler became Reserve Champion w0ith Rosea after winning their section earlier in the morning.
Pony BYRDS rider Taylor Denness won the afternoon Championship with a scorching 71.96% on the 5 year old pony Saco W. This was to be just the start of this young lady’s successful weekend. Taylor and Saco W continued their winning ways the next day in the afternoon Novice Championships with another mammoth score of over 70%. This result surprised Taylor and her family even more than the win in the Prelim as the young pony has only competed a handful of times at Novice level!
Close behind Taylor in the afternoon Preliminary Championships with a score of 70% was Ruth Stevens and Venturer to become Reserve Champions. Ruth also took third place in this ride off on her other ride Tyrone.
Reserve Champion position in the Sunday afternoon Novice Championship went to Sian Kendall and Benson-o-Pencoder with very good score of 70.52%

Lucy Miles became our first Sunday winners taking the morning Novice Championship with Talisman Boy. She kept her nerve to ride a second polished test in the sunlit International arena.
It was only with the narrow margin of less than half a percent that Nikki Devulder and Oscar were beaten into Reserve Champion position.

The first elementary championship was fought right down to the wire with the first two places only being separated by their collectives.
Coming out on top and becoming our first Elementary Champion of the day we had Maxine Gayler and her own Rapacity. Maxine was amazed and delighted with her win on the 18 year old gelding who is a relative newcomer to dressage as the pair no longer compete in jumping disciplines. They have been together for 12 years having done everything from eventing to working hunters and hacking on the beach and all the riding club things. Maxine sang the praises of her trainer Sally Andrews, saying that it was Sally that had given her the confidence to go out and win with her support and enthusiasm.
Ending up with the title of Reserve Champion, after being so close to the winner, was Hickstead regular Judith Warbey, on her lovely dark bay warmblood gelding In Mahgogani. They both received a combined score of 67.59% from the judges Penny Hayward and Debbie Pateman.

The last championship of the day also saw very tight marks at the top with only 0.2% separating Champion and Reserve Champion. The Wrong Trousers came right on the day with Clair Worskett to become Elementary Champion number 2. Clair’s comments running somewhere on the lines of ‘…. But we never win ANYthing!!’, she and Grommett were deserved winners this time on a score of 68.62%.
Hot on her heels however we had Tiffany Morgan and Don Quixote taking Reserve Champion position with 68.45%.

All at Dressage at Hickstead would like to wish our winners many many congratulations and would also like to thank everyone for coming and making it such a lovely weekend for everybody involved.

Sarah Brabrook on Linda Hopkin’s Winsom Van OvarisThe 15th of April brought Prelim wins for Kirsty Brown on Jack Daniels and Sarah Brabrook on Linda Hopkin’s Winsom Van Ovaris.

Kirsty scored a huge 70% on the laid back, German bred 5 year old gelding who took his winning day totally in his stride! Both novices were taken by Kim Boeijink and her home bred chestnut mare Reminisce. This sensitive 9 year old is by Kim’s own Dutch stallion, Talisman, out of a Czech mare which Kim also owned.Kim Boeijink and her home bred chestnut mare Reminisce

The elementary’s were hard fought classes with Trina Stewart and Dinaro II taking the Elementary 42 with a wopping 71.25%! Liana Tarling and Ronnie won the Elementary 43.

Sarah-Louise Wood with her own Renwood George Sarah-Louise Wood had a fantastic day with her own Renwood George taking both the medium classes. This 15 year old pure thoroughbred has been owned by Sarah-Louise since he was only 5 and has now qualified for Hickstead’s September championships.

April 25th

Tracy Duncan and the brilliantly named Girly Intuition came up top trumps in the Prelim 10 with Jenny Owen and her own Balim Ben Cid taking the large Prelim 19 class in the early morning mist.

Dressage at Hickstead regular John Mills and Flowerhill Gucci won the Novice 25 with a good score of 65.6%. Novice 35 saw Daniel Timson ride young German mare Barcarole on her first time out to a competition.Jenny Saddler on Ksar

Grandmother of five Jenny Saddler was delighted with her win on Ksar in Medium 64. She credited her trainer Sally Andrews for being so encouraging, giving her the confidence to get out at this level and enjoy it so much. Medium 71 saw Tracy Simon and Wandra as the winners.Badr Al Omran riding Cornish Promise

Two familiar faces to Hickstead took the Advanced Medium and Pick a Test Classes. Helen Kenny, winning on Silent Heights and Badr Al Omran riding Cornish Promise to victory in the Prix St Georges. Cornish Promise is owned by David Gunner and Badr has had the ride for 2 years now. They are hoping to get a place to compete on the Home International teams this year.

The Dressage at Hickstead Unaffiliated Championships 13th September 2008

A high quality select field took their positions on the starting blocks on a lovely sunny Saturday ready to fight for the title of Hickstead's Unaffiliated Champion 2008. As always a fantastic relaxed but competitive atmosphere set the day on its legs as the Prelim Champs kicked off.

Emerging as the as the Preliminary Champion after a hard fought class was Caroline Brockhurst and Runner with 67.92% from judges Yvonne Huber and Thelma Russell-Hayes, just 1% in front of equal Reserve Champions Georgina Messenger on Allegretto and Jenny Owen and Balim Ben Cid. Runner is a ‘gentle giant’ 17hh 10 year old Dutch warmblood by Lennard has been owned by Caroline since he was a just broken 3 1/2 year old and brought on slowly. He was bought to show-jump and event, which they hope to affiliate in next year but Caroline said she is so enjoying the dressage on him because of his laid back character and, having had event horses who have always hated dressage, it makes such a difference to have one who excels in it! Interestingly he is a ‘barefoot’ horse (unshod) which Caroline says really suits him and also helps keep the bills down! They really had a fantastic time at the championships, also being placed 7th in the Novice Championships.

The Novice class saw Sally Rees and The Dauphin as the new Champions with Tracey Simon and Wandra becoming Reserve Champion. Sally has owned 7 year old ‘Louis’, who is a grandson of Donnerhall and Calypso II, for 2 years having bought the gelding in Germany and has started competing at affiliated competitions as well. She was over the moon with her win and unfortunately then far too distracted to remember the test in the Elementary Championships which she had also qualified for! Louis is described as a ‘sensitive but steady soul’ and together they are aiming for ‘as high as the capabilities of the rider will let them!’ but is thoroughly looking forward to competing at Hickstead again next year as she enjoys the shows here so much. Sally has done most of the training herself with this talented chap but now says she really must look for a permanent set of ‘eyes on the ground’ to help her take him further up the levels.

The accolade of the highest score of the day went to Kate Butling and her own 8 year old Dutch gelding Tango in the Elementary Championships. The 17hh grandson of Cocktail, who has been proudly owned by Kate since he was a yearling, scored a massive 73.62% with judge at B Sally Andrews only comment about the test was "WOW". Kate understandably adores her 'pony', as she calls him, saying "he just always takes everything in his stride and is heaven to own" and is now hoping to move on and start at medium level in affiliated shows in the winter. Reserve Elementary Champions were Claire Randall and Vinquino who are becoming regulars in the championship placings being the 2007 Prelim Champion and Novice Reserve Champion.

Maggie Whatford and her own gelding Minita Harlequin scored 66% from the 2 judges to become the Medium Champions just pushing the very local Sarah Davidson & Spud in to the Reserve Champion position with 65.57% in the biggest class of the championships.
Minita Harlequin who is 10 years old and was bred by Maggie to jump, is a pure Irish Draught by Hillview Farm Milligan. They have trained with Sally Andrews right from the beginning and say that it is down to her that the aptitude for dressage was first seen and nurtured. ‘Harry’ is “always up for learning new things” and is described as so laid back and that he an absolute pleasure to compete and deal with. The pair also compete in affiliated competitions and qualified for the Hickstead Dressage Masters semi finals this year. Harry too has a very proud ‘grandmother’ in the owner of his dams mother, who keeps a track of all his and his brother’s (Minita Greenstone) successes.

The title of Advanced Medium Champions went to Badr Al Omran, a very regular face at Hickstead on the incredibly consistent Cornish Promise. Scoring 61.52% in a class which unfortunately shrank in size drastically partly due to the date change we were forced into by the lovely British summer which we had. Liz Eaton and European Baccara took the reserve Champion place rising two places from the 4th place which she achieved in the Medium Championships.

Dressage at Hickstead would like to take this opportunity give a massive thank you its kind sponsors for the season – Baileys Horse Feeds and Apogee photocopiers – and to also thank all our competitors for supporting us and being so flexible with changing weekends. We wish all our competitors a successful winter and look forward to seeing all next year. Thank you for coming!!
